The Journey Home is a special book because it imparts an important message about conservation for kids and this is what’s propelled it’s success; numerous awards including being shortlisted for the Waterstones Children's Book Prize, and also it’s new incarnation as a children’s play.
As the first of 7 books I’ve worked on with Frann Preston-Gannon, it’s been exciting to see her style develop throughout and each time we work together, I feel my role as a designer is to complement her beautiful illustrations as best I can. I aim to choose fonts that enhance the personalities of her characters, strike a balance of the text placement – interesting vs not interfering – and collaborate, suggesting ideas if I think they could enhance the book, which Frann is always receptive to.
