When asked to come up with some cover concepts for a straight-talking, down to earth book for new mothers called Pregnancy: The Naked Truth, one way I addressed this was with illustration.
I felt that one of the biggest ‘naked truths’ for new mothers would be the impact of seeing their bodies physically change to accommodate a new mini person. As this is also a striking visual to draw people across a bookshop I set to work creating visuals based on this. Typography was then incorporated and I emphasized the contrast between the word ‘Pregnancy’ – depicted in a friendlier type – and then ‘The Naked Truth’ – illustrated in a barer, starker way, yet still with a friendliness that wouldn’t be off-putting.
